Abstract: Over the past few decades there has been great interest in reducing subspaces for multiplication operators on both the Hardy and Bergman spaces. In this talk I want to focus on the other extreme: multiplication operators without any non-trivial reducing subspaces. I will report on some partial progress on the open problem of characterizing irreducible multiplication operators on the Bergman space.
